From extensive freediving research conducted at universities such as the Karolinski Institute and Harvard University, we are now developing a better understanding and learning the true value of the mammalian diving reflex. Integrating this groundbreaking research with 10 years of extensive teaching experience and training of world class freediving athletes; FII has identified the key knowledge and essential skills to effectively train individuals in the sport of freediving. FII has developed a specialized curriculum that trains its students utilizing their own inborn mammalian dive reflexes to move efficiently underwater on one breath in a matter of days! Many freediving education agencies focus less importance on technique and knowledge and more importance on performance. This teaching method offers the diver a quick growth that is quickly limited by poor technique and discomfort at depth. FII’s principles are based around developing core techniques and understanding that, from this solid foundation, performance follows and the freediver confidently evolves. Martin Stepanek13-Time World Record Freediver and Founder of the F.I.I. System
Martin's strong desire to improve the effectiveness and safety of freediving education led him to start his own freedive training agency, FII (Freediving Instructors International). FII continues to move forward, paving the way in modern freediving education and is now the largest freediving training agency in the United States. Martin and his team of Instructors have trained some of the worlds elite watermen atheletes utilising the F.I.I. system, along with cliental such as the Crown Prince of Dubai, World Champion Big Wave Surfer Garrett McNamara, and World Champion Freestyle Skydiver Omar Alhegelan.
A native of Czech Republic, Martin is a popular international sporting figure offering seminars and lectures worldwide from motivational speaking to community charity events. He is an ‘Ocean Hero’ for the world’s largest ocean protection group, Oceana where he brings awareness to important ocean conservation issues.

Martin Stepanek is a freediving pioneer having gone to depths never before - over 400 feet on a single breath of air. He claimed his first Freediving World Record in 2001, and has since gone on to become one of the world's top freedivers in history, setting over 13 World Records thus far in his competitive career. Martin's passion for physiology and sports biology led him to explore what the human body experiences while freediving and he worked closely with top researchers from prestigious universities such as Harvard and the Karolynski Institute of Sweden to uncover some of the physiological mysteries behind his sport. His participation in this ongoing research has helped scientists better understand the impact that depth and pressure have on the freediver.
